Q. My coworkers appear to be leaving in droves

and I’m being asked to fill positions I don’t want. I fear that if I don’t, I won’t be considered for any upcoming promotions. Can you help?

A. Although the huge resignation has subsided, it is undeniable that businesses in the insurance sector seek out top people. Since Covid, the number of remote positions in the insurance sector has increased, giving insurance professionals nationwide job options. These historical occurrences combined are making employers insane. The predicament you are in is widespread, but the underlying cause of it is uncommon; the pandemic has compelled companies to adopt fresh approaches that are sometimes less beneficial to their staff than hopeful.

Thankfully, there are benefits to unusual circumstances. Knowing that your employer needs you more than ever as an employee or jobseeker will help you advance in your career. You might be requested to take on additional work or a new function until the pandemic is finished. As long as you work for a company and management team that actually appreciates your effort and expertise, I advocate embracing these jobs. The high rate of turnover tells the tale. Before COVID, employees who wished to leave their jobs were unable to do so because the curve had not yet flattened as of March 2019. The reverse occurred this year. There are jobs available everywhere, and many of your colleagues might be upgrading.

The best piece of news I can share with you is that you now have more leverage in your profession than ever before.

Spider-most Man’s famous adage is, “With tremendous power comes great responsibility.” Use this ability to succeed in your job! Here are a few things to think about.

Determine the requirements you "must-have" for your current or prospective career.

The hardest part to comprehend is that firms are still attempting to determine how their “post” COVID workforce will look. We do know that you have more choices than ever before.

Due to the reopening of offices, people are leaving today. You could choose to work from home. What about more money, better management, a position closer to home, a manageable workload, or a clear path to career advancement? If your current employer can accommodate the majority of your must-haves, you have your answer.

Do a "stay interview" with your manager.

Before you decide to leave your job or accept a post that you don’t desire in the near future, ask your boss for a stay interview. Ask the manager during this meeting how you are doing, what the future holds beyond COVID, and how likely it is that most of your future “must-haves” will come to pass. Also, it is an excellent moment to request a pay raise. Although there is no cure for a chaotic workplace, businesses will go to any lengths to retain their best workers. They won’t make you a counteroffer if you leave your job and don’t obtain the raise (which is a true career killer).

Flexibility is the key

After the virus has been contained, businesses will assess who has survived, what changes they will make going forward, and how they will engage their post-COVID workforce and recruit new employees. Your golden ticket over the past twenty months of such great change is your flexibility (doing things to aid the team even if you don’t want to) and output. It demonstrates to your current employer that you are a team member capable of implementing radical changes to achieve organizational objectives. Excellent employers will take note of your achievements and go above and beyond to ensure that you join their post-COVID workforce in the position you really want. If you don’t feel this right now, it could be time to change jobs.
